Humming
Let’s switch gears for a moment and talk about the transmission. If your transmission hums when you are in neutral, this can be the sound of death. It’s a good idea to have the transmission serviced as soon as possible before you end up with additional transmission problems that are expensive.
Knocking
Knocking generally comes from the engine, although the driveshaft can knock if the U-joint is worn. Knocking can be caused by problems with the fuel in the cylinders or by worn rod bearings. The latter can damage the cylinder block and break a rod, which will leave you with a dead engine.
Rumbling
Now, let’s switch to the exhaust system. If your vehicle rumbles loudly, you may need to replace the muffler. You may also need to replace the catalytic converter because it’s been stolen. Finally, the engine can rumble loudly if the exhaust system is leaking.
Squealing
Your engine is equipped with a serpentine (accessory) belt that serves a lot of purposes. This belt will squeal loudly if it is too loose. Sometimes, this is a sign that you need a new belt tensioner. Your brake system will also squeal if you need new brake pads or the brakes are overheating.
Tapping
