The average lifespan of an automobile battery is three years. Many people will get up to four years out of the battery before it dies. Thankfully, most batteries give you a warning that they need to be replaced. If you pay attention to the warnings, you may never end up stranded with a dead battery.
Battery Warning Light
You may get a dashboard warning in the form of an illuminated battery light. This is an indication that there is a problem with the battery. As an aside, it is also important to note that the battery light will turn on if the alternator is going bad. Basically, this warning light covers anything electrical.
Slow/Cranking Engine
You may also notice that your engine cranks more often than it used to before it fires up. If you get the engine started, head straight to our shop so we can test the battery and replace it if necessary. An engine that cranks a lot and is difficult to start has a battery that is going bad.
Dim Lights/Slow Accessories
Other signs that you have a problem with your car’s battery are dim lights and slow accessories. This is because the lights and the accessories are not getting the power they need to operate normally. This can also happen if the alternator is going bad. We can test both to find the exact problem.
Terminals That Are Corroded
If you suspect that your battery is going bad, inspect it. Check to see if the battery terminals are corroded. You should also look for corrosion on the cable connectors. If you find corrosion anywhere on the battery, the battery is leaking battery acid and water. The battery needs to be replaced.
Strange Odors Around the Battery
You can confirm that the battery is leaking acid by smelling the area around the battery. If it smells like rotten eggs, you are smelling the odor of sulfuric acid. This means that your battery is leaking and you need a new one installed in your car, truck, or utility vehicle as soon as possible.
Cracked or Warped Battery Case
Finally, while you are inspecting your battery you should also check the case. It should not be cracked or bubbling. It also shouldn’t be warped. If the case looks damaged in any way, there is an issue with the chemical reaction inside of the battery. In other words, you need a new battery.
